Online ABS Course Description: Our curriculum and e-dvds were designed to instruct students on how to become proficient as a “hands-on healer” using the ancient wisdom of Ayurvedic healing, shamanic principles, energy medicine, and touch therapy systems to help alleviate the stress of today’s world. Students will learn the foundations of medical Ayurveda, including how to access and classify pain, identify specific pain remedies, apply oils, poultices, and thermo and hydrotherapy, as well as use healing muds/pastes, marma pressure points, herbal potions, and anoint the body with other therapeutic substances.

Students will learn how to harmonize bodywork modalities with the seasons, doshic diet, and routine protocols, using neutral, safe, and innocuous oils, as well as energy medicine, intuitive awakening of the soul’s innate healing gifts, therapeutic applications, and pastes. They will also be able to demonstrate proficiency in using hands-on techniques. The material in this manual is rooted in the ancient healing modalities of ‘pancha karma’, a Sanskrit word referring to India’s ancient purification and rejuvenation system.  Students will uncover modified, yet sacred and powerful versions of this ancient system. The scope of practice that this impressed upon the reader is geared for the “general” population, where the disease process has not advanced past the 4th stage. A doctor should perform clinical panchakarma, a highly medically practical and time-proven approach that transforms human physiology.

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest hers/his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and the cause and prevention of disease” — Thomas Edison

This course was not designed for diagnostic purposes, pulse analysis, or the replacement of a licensed massage therapy program or the allopathic medical profession; instead, it was intended for harmonious integration into various indigenous and traditional medical systems. It is helpful, but not required, for students to have a massage license before enrolling in this course. However, it may be a prerequisite at the “state level”, for legal reasons, if graduates intend to charge for the services outlined in this book. We recommend learning the specific rules in the state where you reside or wish to practice, regarding the legality of professional massage therapy, as each state has its unique regulations. Some states allow for spiritual touch healing with an online minister’s license. Shirodhara Therapy can be done, with some exceptions, without massaging the body. Therefore, it may be one of the therapies that would fall under the category of spiritual touch healing, not requiring a license. Each state will have a different name and description for such categories as well. NCBTMB Ayurveda Massage

Our ABS course manual was designed for two types of students: those studying online and those attending classes on campus (Live). It is a compilation of various classroom handouts, slides, articles, and unpublished classroom materials, including content that may not be found elsewhere. We seamlessly and coherently merged all this data to create a comprehensive, unique text based on true Ayurvedic theories and experiences from many licensed massage therapy instructors with extensive training and history. Many of these instructors trained with some of the world’s leading Ayurveda experts and doctors. As an option, online students are encouraged to participate in the “live” seminars at Sacred Stone School after exploring this e-course to deepen their knowledge and be in the presence of an experienced teacher.

Prerequisites: Anyone with a passion can enroll in and pass this course to earn a Document of Completion for non-vocational reasons, particularly for personal growth and self-care purposes. This course is an excellent way to help your family and friends as well as a way to deepen your knowledge in the ancient art of Ayurveda. Full ABS Certification is only available to those students who attend our one-day practical exam on campus OR submit a YouTube video, as described below, to meet the other outlined requirements for this course. A successful YouTube video will earn you a certification. Unless the student is already a licensed massage therapist or licensed to touch the body in your state under another vocation, it may be illegal to charge for ABS therapies in your state unless you have your minister’s license.  In most states, ministers may offer such services as a vocation and legally charge their clients or request a donation, although they should not use the term “massage” or pretend to be a massage therapist. This course was not designed to license anyone or prepare them for the MBLEX exam or any other national massage exams.

What is the basis of all study? Naturally, it is the student, the knower. The knower is the common basis of all knowledge. Unless the knower of knowledge is brought to conscious awareness, the common basis of all branches of learning will not be structured in the mind. Therefore, knowledge of the knower is the direct means to arrive at the goal of interdisciplinary study.” – Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, 1972, 28-5

Course Instructions & Requirements: (On-campus “live” students are exempt.)

This online ABS course is designed for self-motivated and self-directed students. There is no specific order of how students should watch all the videos. Instead, students have the freedom of choice on how they feel most comfortable proceeding. Some students prefer to watch the videos before reading the manual, while others prefer the opposite approach. It is recommended that students take the written multiple-choice exam before their practice sessions and YouTube submission. All the forms below are also stored in a separate “lesson” within your learning dashboard for your convenience. Ideally, two friends could enroll in this course together and become “study buddies” to help inspire one another along and stay on track.

Detailed instructions on the hands-on (5 practicum) portion of this e-course:

Choose between 3-5 of the following modalities:

Sacred Stone Massage, Marma Point Therapy, Udvartana Therapy, Karna Purana Therapy, Nasya Therapy, Garshana Therapy, Swedhana Therapy, and practice between the 3-5 modalities with your five clients. You may choose to work with five different clients or opt to work with only one client for all five practicum sessions. When selecting which modalities to practice with your five clients, you may concentrate on a specific modality for that client. Still, you can also customize your session with a combination of therapies, provided you practice your modalities on all five clients, totaling 5 hours of practicum sessions.

We do not require students to practice all modalities, as not everyone has the necessary equipment. Therefore, we require a minimum of three modalities, with the option to study up to five if possible.

After you’ve assessed your five clients’ imbalances, choose a modality suited for that client; however, your choice should be supported by Ayurvedic theory. Refer to your notes from the client’s intake (profile) forms, as well as all other relevant factors, including their health history and any other observations.

When choosing which modalities to practice with your five clients, you may concentrate on a specific modality for that client. Still, you can also customize your session with a combination of therapies, provided you practice your modalities on all five clients, totaling 5 hours of practicum sessions.

For example, you may repeat 2 of the same modality or create a combination from several of the shorter modalities into one session. Alternatively, one session could combine Nasya and Karna Purana therapy, while another session could incorporate Marma Points with Abhyanga Therapy, and so on. Or, 2 Nasya Therapies, 2 Abhyanga Therapies, and 1 Marma Point Therapy sessions

Sessions can be performed in the location of your choice. It needs to be clean, professional, and provide client privacy. Spend one hour with each client to complete a total of 5 hours of practicum sessions, allowing extra time for preparation and cleanup. Please use the online forms below to submit all forms, as handwritten or Word documents will not be accepted.

On-Campus “Live” Student ABS Practicum Requirements: This requirement does NOT apply to distant E-Course students unless you want to attend the day of the practicum exam in person. Please note the online multiple-choice exam is required for ALL students, including on-campus students. As part of the on-campus ABS Practicum requirements, please choose one client or a friend and create an individualized treatment plan for at least 3 of the following modalities: Abhyanga, Sacred Stone Massage, Marma Point Therapy, Udvartana Therapy, Karna Purana Therapy, Nasya Therapy, Garshana Therapy, or Swedhana Therapy.

Take into account that person’s imbalances and health history. Write four paragraphs describing why each modality was chosen, how it should be applied to this particular client, and the expected benefits. On the day of the Final Practicum, bring a client or friend and the necessary supplies to enact and perform the treatment plan. Students only need to enact approximately 15-20 minutes of each therapy as an example or snippet for exam purposes. Students are responsible for providing a “body” if your client/friend can’t make it.

Your instructor will observe each student for harmonious client interactions, proper station setup, skill set, professionalism, confidence, attitude, and application of Ayurvedic logic in each chosen modality. (The instructor may quietly inquire about the logic during the practicum.) Please refer to the ABS Rubrics document for more details. Once students complete their Final Practicum with their client/friend, they will be required to write one final paragraph about how the treatment plan went, critiquing themselves and what happened as the plan was implemented. Include a couple of sentences on your experience in “giving” these therapies.

Clients will also be required to fill out an evaluation form. Students should hand in their final report to the ABS Instructor as part of the exam and evaluation process. Students will be notified by email within 2 weeks of their passing Final Practicum score. Students will be notified of the exam date at least two months in advance and, upon arrival, will have 30 minutes to set up their stations, warm the oils, and prepare for the practicum. During this time, students should be quiet, engaging in conversations with their clients as part of the intake process, meditating, and practicing self-care to prepare for the practicum. The practicum demonstrations should last no more than 3-4 hours, including cleanup and the closing circle.
